Garmin eTrex Legend Review

April 27th, 2009

When looking for a GPS navigation device you can use mainly for outdoor use, the Garmin eTrex Legend has many features you can take advantage of. While the device is small and has a black and white screen that measures 288 x 160 pixels, it can be used when driving short or long distances and relies on 12 satellites for accurate information in real time.

Navigation Features

If you plan on using this device for hiking, walking, and other outdoor activities, you will find that it is easy to carry with other supplies in a backpack or even your pocket. This device has 8 MB of memory for storing maps, waypoints, and routes that you need to get to and from different destinations.

This device can hold up to 500 waypoints, and up to 20 routes that contain up to 50 waypoints to use when planning a hike, returning to your favorite fishing spot, or when trying to find your vehicle after a long camping trip. Plotting waypoints is a great way to not only see how far you have come, but also as a way to remember how to get back to your camp site, car, or hotel.

Even though this device is equipped with base maps of North America and South America, you will have to download additional maps, however, in order to take advantage of street and topographical views. You can choose from different software programs, which helps you cut down on the cost.

Another feature of the eTrex Legend you will find useful while hiking or camping is the click-stick, which is used to move from menu to menu, and map to map. Use this feature when browsing through different maps or waypoints.

Additional Features

The Garmin eTrex Legend GPS has an outer shell that is waterproof. This means that you can take it on boats, or when walking around bodies of water and not have to worry about water damage.

The device is also equipped with a backlight that allows you to read directions and waypoints easily in the daytime or at night.

Even though you may want to invest in a larger GPS unit for driving, the eTrex Legend is a wonderful device to use outdoors. It is very basic, easy to transport, and has enough memory to store waypoints, maps, and other information you may need to enjoy a day of hiking, boating, fishing, skiing, or hunting.
